29th June 2013 - 8th day in Lg. Lamai

I had a trip to the wild with my penan friends.

After applying Mozi-guard, we went on the trip to hunt for food. We first crossed the bridge to reach the other side of the village (seberang).

On the other side of the village, the penan had already start to clean up lands for their plantation. Commonly, they plant paddy as their main food source. They also plant other vegetation like ubi and sugar cane. Papaya, Pineapple, Rebung, Paku Pakis and Bunga Kantan are grown wild in the forest. In Lg. Lamai, people do not work to earn money. Source of food already available in their own farm or jungle.

That morning, we went to the river to hunt for siput sungai. Siput sungai is found at the bottom of the rock near the river bed, usually found at places with lots of leaves or brunches. They can be eaten once cooked. My penen friends bring along their  harpoon, but the water is too cloudy due to the rain yesterday night.

We swam down stream from where we catch the siput sungai until we reach one of the abandon farms. We collect soft daun ubi at the farm and waded our way up stream (back to where catch the siput sungai). We swam against the current on and off when it is too deep for us to wade.

For me, walking bare footed is a wonderful experience. It is totally different in town. The stones below my bare feet gave a natural massage.

Before going back to the village through the jungle, me and u-er get some sugar cane along the way.

Back at home, we have kijang mushroom sup for lunch.

A Visit to the Interior of Sarawak

Visiting the Penan is the most wonderful experience my life ever had. The Penan is a race which is calm and gentle. The Penan in Sarawak interior is totally different from what people see over Samenanjung Malaysia or even the other Pre-bumi in city.

The Penan in the interior find a living by going to jungle or to their farms. Other words, if you are willing to work you will survive. Unlike what we face in city, we might wish to get a job yet the job opportunities available are very limited. This result in much stress in work.

Out of my expectation, old folks in Penan are even more durable than the youngster. Their speed and reflex is so much swifter than the young man. One of the aged hunters in Penan even out ran a deer and kill it with its spear. In jungle, people are advise to greet older once from a distance, because greet face to face(near) might sometimes be miss-sinter-prated as an assault due to the quick hunting reflex. The issue of head hunters that attack the interior pribumi also contribute to this reflex of defence.

They are really unlike city old folks!

The hunting equipments of the Penan are as bellow.
- blow pipe
- parang
- hunting rifle
- tombak

Jungle is also a place that I could really life out my masculine heart as a male. The environment and challenge that I encounter in the nature makes me more man like. It is such as life giving experience and I'm surely going to visit them again. Trust me, there is still much stories to write in. But I think I will leave it to you.
